Re/imagine with The Refinery: Jimmy Patch

Thinking about applying for The Refinery 2023? Who better to hear from than Refinery alumni. We caught up with Jimmy Patch to find out about his experience with the program.

Who is Jimmy Patch?

Good question! Still trying to work this one out. I come from a varied creative background both academically and work based. I landed head-on into this thing called graphic recording, which is essentially taking live, graphical notes of conversations and presentations. This led to me saying 'yes' to a lot more opportunities in animation, illustration and consulting, which has resulted in a creative production house called Patch Creative.

Why did you apply for The Refinery?

At the time of Refinery 3.0, I'd moved to the Sunshine Coast only a short while earlier and was keen to connect and explore the region's creative industry. In addition to this, my business had grown to some extent and I was wanting to reflect on where it was and understand how to take things to the next level.

What was the most valuable thing you got out of The Refinery?

In short; time. Every week at the Refinery I had two days that I could reflect on my business, my ambitions and also bounce ideas off other fascinating creatives, professional mentors in established industries and engaged facilitators. It was taking this time out of the day-to-day chaos that allowed me to be objective and analytical about my future as a creative.

Biggest surprise?

I think it was the calibre of people and mentors that we had access to. There were a variety of different industries and approaches that ensured there was really something for everyone. Each time we'd find out who was next it would be a great surprise.

What was the value of Refinery to your business?

As a business that was already working in industry and generating income, I was very much caught up in general business functions. Refinery helped me to think about the future of my business and also my creative personal skillset. Participating in The Refinery provided me the opportunity to think without restriction and try and understand where I was trying to get to. I've already seen the benefits of this thinking in my work and growth has continued with this in mind.

What opportunities have arisen since completing The Refinery?

It's now a few years on and I think there's been some real tangible opportunities as well as some more subconscious changes in the way I think and run things. I've made some fantastic friends and contacts in the Sunshine Coast space and beyond. I've gotten to work on projects as a result of The Refinery and they've been a great experience.

Would you recommend The Refinery?

Most definitely. Anyone who is starting a business, running a business that needs some care and love or even someone with a small seed of an idea. This is for you!
