The Refinery is offering a six-month artist residency for early-career visual artists. It provides studio space and mentorship for both creative and professional growth, and opportunities to show new work. 

Applicants should be visual artists looking to experiment within their practice and share their progress with industry professionals and peers. The residency outcomes include artist talk, workshop, open studio and showing. 

The selected artist will receive use of a large studio suitable for various practices and mentoring support.

Applications require a CV, a portfolio of previous work, and a response to selection criteria. Deadline for applications: midday 20 May 2024.

R|Artist Residency: Sub Tropic is a six-month artist residency offering early-career visual artists a studio space to experiment within their practice, build their profile, and receive mentoring.

The successful candidate will be a visual artist seeking to experiment within their practice with a plan to produce new work, and be committed to discussing and presenting their work in progress to industry professionals and peers through an artist talk, open studio, and showing of their work in the space. These events will be hosted by SCCA. Additionally, the successful applicant will conduct a workshop at Sub Tropic during the residency, with income from ticket sales paid to the artist.

What you will receive from SCCA:

  • Sub Tropic studio: a large 34-square-metre studio space featuring concrete floors and a wet area equipped with a tap and sink, suitable for a variety of artistic practices

  • Mentoring 

  • Curatorial and installation support to produce a showing of new work.

Application Process

R|Artist Residency: Sub Tropic is by application. Applications close midday 20 May 2024.

Applications must include:

  • A CV (up to two pages)

  • Examples of previous work provided as a PDF, consisting of 5 - 10 images with written captions 

  • A response to the selection criteria (maximum 700 words)

  • Be an early career visual artist seeking to experiment within your practice

  • Have a plan to produce work during the residency

  • Be committed to discussing and presenting your work in progress to industry professionals and peers throughout the 6-month residency

  • Provide SCCA with permission to document your residency for the purposes of promoting you and your work across SCCA channels.
